Wealth of Indonesia’s Presidents: From Soekarno to Prabowo

Jakarta — Since independence in 1945, Indonesia has been led by eight presidents, each leaving behind not only a political legacy but also public curiosity about their personal wealth. The figures vary widely, from modest millions of rupiah to assets valued in trillions, reflecting different eras, economic systems, and personal circumstances.

For the country’s first president, Soekarno, no official record exists, though a 2012 Austrian newspaper once claimed he had vast overseas assets, a claim that remains unverified. His successor, Soeharto, was long associated with immense wealth, with international reports in the late 1990s suggesting billions of dollars were moved abroad after his resignation, though no definitive official figure was ever confirmed.

B.J. Habibie, who served briefly after Soeharto, was reported by regional media to have wealth in the tens of millions of US dollars, largely linked to his background in technology and intellectual property. His family also maintained significant business interests in the sector. Abdurrahman Wahid, better known as Gus Dur, was far more modest, with official disclosures in 2001 listing assets of just a few billion rupiah, mostly in property and savings.

Megawati Soekarnoputri, who governed in the early 2000s, declared wealth of around ninety-six billion rupiah in 2014, while her successor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reported nearly fourteen billion rupiah that same year, spread across property, vehicles, and cash holdings. Joko Widodo, who rose from local politics to the presidency, reported assets of ninety-five billion rupiah in 2023, a steady increase from the previous year, with most of his wealth in land and buildings.

The current president, Prabowo Subianto, stands out with a declaration of more than two trillion rupiah in 2023, dominated by securities and extensive property holdings. His reported wealth places him at the top of the list, underscoring the stark contrast with earlier leaders whose assets were far smaller in scale.

This overview illustrates not only the personal fortunes of Indonesia’s presidents but also the shifting economic and political landscape of the nation. From unverified claims of hidden overseas accounts to transparent modern disclosures through the official wealth reporting system, the story of presidential wealth mirrors Indonesia’s broader journey toward accountability and openness in public life.
